Establishment of IRRC  Formed during the 2012 legislative session (Senate File 2284), with continued appropriations in the 2013 session.  Under the auspices of the Iowa Department of Education.  Fiscal Agent is Grant Wood AEA within the AEA consortium

Advisory Council Institutes of Higher Education Iowa Department of Education AEAs & LEAs Education Associations & Organizations Community Partners The role of the Advisory Council is to promote knowledge regarding literacy instruction that supports the mission and goals of the Center. The council meets quarterly to advise and provide assistance to the IRRC.

Purpose of IRRC To apply current research for the development and dissemination of best practices around literacy instruction so that every child in Iowa will achieve reading proficiency.

IRRC Initiatives  School Community Partnerships/ Family Resources  Goal: The IRRC website will house a collection of online literacy resources for families to use to support their children’s literacy at home.  Informational videos  Articles  At-home activities  Virtual activities  Applications for smartphones/tablets Coming Fall 2014

IRRC Initiatives  Intensive Summer Reading Program  Goal: Establish criteria and guidelines  A small task team was created to develop guidelines and criteria for programs that are to be implemented in 2017  Members include: IRRC staff, community partners, district assistant superintendent, district reading consultant, elementary principal and curriculum director

Steps for Intensive Summer Reading Program  Work with national experts to identify research related to summer reading programs  Meet with all superintendents to gather information related to current practices as well as what their needs are related to summer programs  Work with regent universities to conduct a follow-up landscape assessment of current summer reading practices  Hold meetings with key stakeholders to vet the criteria and guidelines  Write guidance and criteria for dissemination Coming Spring/Summer 2015
