The Challenges of Nationalism and Conservatism

Nationalism Based on the concept that a nation is composed of people of like customs, language, culture and history.

Opposition to the Vienna Settlement Creation of the Austria and Russian Empires.

German and Italian groups displaced

Irish Problem In 1800, England took over Ireland.

Liberals: Political Goals Legal equality Religious toleration Freedom of press Limited power of gov’t. Written constitutions

Liberals: Did not advocate democracy Extending representation to propertied classes (strongly disliked poorer class) Laissez-faire Free trade

Conservatism Legitimate Monarchies Landed Aristocracies Established Churches Protection of Property

Beliefs of Conservatives Monarchs could only trust governments of aristocracy. No representative govt. could protect private property. No written constitutions. The Church- hated Enlightenment ideas.

Austrian Prince Metternich Epitomized 19 th Century Conservatism. Attempted to keep the states of the German confederation from having constitutions. Prevented Austria from having a representative government.

Groups under Metternich’s control Germans, Hungarians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Italians, and Croats.

Frederick William III Conservative Promised a constitutional gov’t. for Prussia Through some inter- working, kept complete control of Prussia (junkers).

Power of students… Students organized nationalistic clubs to counteract conservatism.
