How did Europe React to French Revolution?

2. The Congress of Vienna
A meeting of European powers – Britain, Austria, Prussia and Russia – in Vienna, Austria
Met in September 1814
Led by Prince Klemens von Metternich
Guided by the Principle of Legitimacy
Rearranged territories in Europe.

3. Congress of Vienna upheld the philosophy of Conservatism.
Britain, Austria, Prussia and Russia created the Concert of Europe. France later joined the Concert.
They adopted the Principle of Intervention.
Britain rejected the principle.

4. New Forces of Change Liberalism
A political philosophy based on enlightenment principle.
People should be as free as possible from government control
Protection of civil liberties: equality before the law and freedom of assembly, speech and press.
Freedoms must be guaranteed.
Religious toleration
Legislative assembly and constitution
No democracy

5. New Forces of Change Nationalism
A public awareness of belonging to a community with common institutions, traditions, languages, and customs.
People’s loyalty belong to the nation, not to the monarch
French revolution help create nationalism

6. New Revolutions Revolutions of 1830
Liberals overthrew Bourbon monarch Charles X and established a constitutional monarchy
Upper-middle class supported the new system
Belgium declared independence of the Dutch Republic.
Poles tried to break Russian dominance but failed.
Italians tried to break Austrian dominance but failed.

7. New Revolutions Revolutions of 1848
French monarchy was overthrown and a 2nd republic was declared.
Government was to be elected by universal male suffrage.
Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte became president.
German People in the German States made rebellion and demanded unification
A German Confederation was created
A legislative assembly – the Frankfurt Assembly – was created.
Italians made another attempt to be free but failed.
