ISIS-Linked Attacks http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/06/17/world/middleeast/map-isis-attacks-around-the-world.html?_r=0 What are the locations where the largest number of deaths have occurred? What does the suggest about the danger to the United States?

Jihadist Attacks by Country What are the countries where most of the Jijhadist attacks occur? What does that suggest about ISIS’ goals? What does that suggest about the danger to the United States?

Muslims living within the European Union http://i100.independent.co.uk/article/11-maps-and-charts-to-challenge-your-perceptions-of-europe--x1rXiulXAx According to this data, who should be most concerned about Muslim attacks?

How many civilians deaths. Who wrote this article How many civilians deaths? Who wrote this article? What is our attention on? ISIS Is Likely Responsible for Nearly 1,000 Civilian Deaths Outside Iraq and Syria By KAREN YOURISH, DEREK WATKINS and TOM GIRATIKANON UPDATED Nov. 17, 2015 Recent terrorist attacks in Paris and the downing of a Russian passenger jet have focused the West’s attention on the Islamic State’s civilian toll outside Iraq and Syria.

What does ISIS have a history of. What is the major leap What does ISIS have a history of? What is the major leap? What have they traditionally relied upon? How was the paris attack different? What did Mr. Skinner say? But the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, has a history of attacking mosques, hotels, busy city streets and other civilian targets in mostly non-Western countries. If the Islamic State is responsible for the Paris killings and the explosion of the Russian plane, as officials on both sides of the Atlantic seem to believe, the civilian death toll outside Iraq and Syria would rise to nearly 1,000 since January. It would also signify a major leap in the group’s ability to direct attacks on the West. Until now, the Islamic State has relied mainly on “lone wolf” followers to strike Western targets with relatively low-tech assaults — shootings, the taking of hostages, hit-and- runs — that draw wide attention but do not cause mass casualties. “This is much different than a normal lone wolf-inspired attack,” Patrick M. Skinner, a former C.I.A. operations officer now with the Soufan Group, a security consultancy, said about the Paris attacks. “This was choreographed.” “The fact that they could do this, especially in Paris, where the intelligence service is really good, clearly there’s a hole somewhere,” Mr. Skinner said.

Where are the attacks directed by Isis Where are the attacks directed by Isis? Where are the attacks inspired by ISIS?

What are the three goals of ISIS currently? The Islamic State has been expanding beyond its base in Iraq and Syria since it declared a caliphate, or Islamic state, in June 2014. The group is focused on three parallel tracks, according to Harleen Gambhir, an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War: inciting regional conflict with attacks in Iraq and Syria; building relationships with jihadist groups that can carry out military operations across the Middle East and North Africa; and inspiring, and sometimes helping, ISIS sympathizers to conduct attacks in the West. “The goal,” Ms. Gambhir said, “is that through these regional affiliates and through efforts to create chaos in the wider world, the organization will be able to expand, and perhaps incite a global apocalyptic war.”

In what regions had ISIS declared provinces?

What is most disconcerting or scary? The Islamic State has declared official provinces — or wilayat — in areas of Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen that had networks loyal to ISIS, many of which have adopted the organization’s signature brutality. While it is still unclear to what extent the Islamic State’s core leadership in Raqqa communicates with its affiliates, Mr. Skinner said ISIS command and control was probably involved in picking the target and the timing of the Russian plane attack after its Sinai affiliate told them they had someone who could plant a bomb. However, Mr. Skinner said, in the wake of the Paris attacks, it is more troubling that ISIS leaders appear to have the ability to direct terrorist cells in distant cities. “It’s a trilogy of terror. They control parts of Iraq and Syria, have wilayats that claim to hold territory, and now they have these cells.”

How many attacks have been inspired by ISIS in the United States How many attacks have been inspired by ISIS in the United States? How many direct attacks in Egypt?

Activity Read your slip of paper. What was the attack? Where was the attack? Is the attack on the United States? Does this attack suggest that the United States or elsewhere needs to worry about ISIS attacks?

Paragraph: Topic sentence Furthermore, another set of reasons the United States should not be worried about the terroristic threat of Syrian refugees is because ISIS’s goals seem to be more greatly directed against Europe and the Middle East, they have only had success inspiring and not directing attacks in the United States and the United States simply does not have the large Muslim population like places in Europe.

Paragraph: First Chunk For example, a New York Times investigation published by Karen Yourish, Detek Watkins and Tom Giratikanon shortly after the November Paris attacks found that Egypt and Yemen have actually suffered far greater casualties than even Paris or elsewhere in Europe in the last year. The Islamic state is just as frustrated with what they feel are not true Muslims as people in the west. This also demonstrates that the United States should probably….

Paragraph: Second Chunk In the article the New York Times reporters tabulated the total number of ISIS inspired and ISIS directed attacks in the period from October of 2014 to November of 2015. While a country like Egypt has suffered twelve attacks directly by the Islamic state the United States has only suffered two that were inspired but not directed by ISIS. It is clear that ISIS’ strategy is to encourage…. It is clear that Syrian refugees are not part of this strategy because…

Paragraph: Third Chunk In addition, the United States simply does not have to fear the large Muslim population such that of some European countries. For example… (quote the number of one country). This shows that Syrian refugees are not to be feared because… This also shows that Syrian refugees are not to be feared because….

Paragraph: Concluding Sentence All of this demonstrates….
