7. Who Did This? Al Qaeda- terrorist network head- Bin Laden.
19 hijackers part of network- 15 of 19 from Saudi Arabia (OBL birthplace & where he lived until his 20’s)- none from Afghanistan.
Why Afghanistan? The Taliban (group that controlled Afghanistan) allowed Al-Qaeda to train there- shared many political and religious views
OBL- fought with the USA against USSR (today Russia) invasion of Afghanistan

•Osama bin Laden- killed by Navy SEALS 5/1/11
•Al Qaeda primarily in Middle East & parts of Africa, though there are smaller “cells” in other countries, especially in Europe, b/c European Union offering refuge from nations currently being affected by war.
ISIS- has replaced AQ as most dangerous group now

4. Osama bin Laden (1998) issued an Islamic religious ruling (known as fatwa) that killing “Americans and their allies - civilians and military - is an individual duty for all Muslims.”

Al Qaeda’s terror network, including Osama Bin Laden were being protected by the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
U.S. invaded Afghanistan 10/7/2001 as part of a military campaign known as “Operation Enduring Freedom.”- still there today

The number of NYPD officers killed: 23
The number of Port Authority police officers killed: 37
The number of U.S. troops killed in Operation Enduring Freedom: 2,343
Estimated units of blood donated to the New York Blood Center: 36,000
Estimated amount donated to 9/11 charities: $1.4 billion
Emergency actions plans did go into effect & NYC was essentially SHUT DOWN. Nobody could travel by car, train, plane, helicopter, bus, bridge, or tunnel in or out of NYC. The local government (police, firefighters, EMS) were all busy responding. So how did all of those people escape lower Manhattan?
