Emily Kinsella USES OF 3D MODELING

WHAT IS 3D MODELING? 3D modeling is the process of creating a surface of a 3 dimensional object is specialised software. When modeling in the 3D software the most basic point you start with is a vertex which is in a 3 dimensional space. Having two vertices connected by a straight line is then defined as a edge. As soon as you have 3 vertices all connected by straight lines you are dealing with a polygon. From then on polygons can get a lot more complex with additional vertices, edges and faces. Edges, Vertices and Faces are all things that you can manipulate in the software to create different outcomes. You can manipulate these by using the move, rotate and scale tools located to left of the Maya user interface. If you feel you need to add more vertices you can use the subdivide tool or insert edge loop tool to create more edges as well. When extruding you add more faces onto you polygon so a square face if extruded would become more cube like.

FILM The first idea for 3D films was in the 1890’s where a British man filed a patent for a 3D movie process. Live action film is made by using 3D cameras which that have two lenses that are offset by the same distance of the human eyes meaning that there is one lense for the left eye and one for the right. There are 3 different types of glasses used to view 3D films; Anaglyph – the glasses with a blue and red lens and is the earliest way of using 3D in film, Polarization – where 2 images are projected onto the same screen through polarizing filters and the glasses help create a 3D effect this is used in normal cinemas. Eclipse – This is the method used by IMAX where a shutter blocks light from each appropriate eye when the converse eye's image is projected on the screen. The projector alternates between left and right images, and opens and closes the shutters in the glasses or viewer in synchronization with the images on the screen. Most successful 3D film is Avatar released in 2009.

TELEVISION People can now watch 3D movies and TV programmes with personal 3D TVs. Ever since 3D TVs were released there are now 3D channels on TV such as Sky 3D 3D can also be used to help create visual effects on TV such as the tardis in doctor who.

GAMING Gaming company use 3D software to create their games, such as Grand Theft Auto 5 was created using Maya. Many different 3D software is used to make games for modern consoles like the Xbox 360, Xbox ONE and the PlayStations. Gaming that uses 3D software is primarily console based games.

MEDICAL 3D can be used to produce clear ultrasounds of babies during pregnancy. 3D scanning can be used to help make customised medical products for patients such as mouth guards in dentistry or making prosthetics. They are currently researching into using 3D printers to help build body parts in the medical field.

ARCHITECTURE 3D can be used in the process of design in architecture. It may be used in the beginning where they architects have created 3D designs that show how rooms and the space will be organised and can help the architect later on in the design process when creating schematic design. The schematic design is used in 3D software where the client can review the project it helps as a visual aid to imagine the design of the building as reviewing in 2D can be difficult.

EDUCATION 3D can be used in many aspects of education. There is an app created to virtually dissect a frog, this was made on 3D software There are many education apps that have been made that involve 3D animation Some school are also starting to use 3D printers to help build on students designing skills.
