Sailing An important part of sailing is the angle of the wind to the sails. The diagram shows the different names (points of sail) given to the directions.

What Makes Up a Ship?

The bow of a ship is the front part of a ship.

Anchor The Anchor is a device that can be lowered to the bottom of a body of water by a chain that prevents or limits a ship from moving.

Wheel House The Wheel House is the part of the boat where the boat wheel is located; also called the bridge.

The right-hand side or direction of a ship. Starboard The right-hand side or direction of a ship.

Port is the left-hand side or direction of a ship.  

Smoke Stack A smoke stack is a large pipe on a boat that allows for smoke to escape.

The main deck is the topmost deck on a ship.

The Prow is the front most part of a ship that cuts through the water.

The gunwale is the upper edge of the side of a vessel.

Propeller The propeller is the part of the ship that has blades that spin in order to make the vessel move.

The stern is the back portion of a ship.

Rudder The rudder is a vertical blade on the back of a ship that can be moved to make the ship turn one way or another.

The hull of a ship is the hallow bottom portion of the ship.
