2 DECK: a floor-like surface wholly or partially occupying one level; strengthens vessel; open platform

3 FUNNEL: a smokestack or tube for ventilation

4 PORT SIDE: left-hand side of a vessel/ship when facing forward

5 STARBOARD SIDE: the right-hand side of a vessel when facing forward

6 ANCHOR: a heavy, shaped piece of iron or steel attached to a chain and dropped in water to hold a ship in place

7 BOW: forward part of vessel; reduces resistance of cutting through water

8 BRIDGE: a raised platform where navigation is supervised

9 CARGO HOLD: a holding place for carrying cargo

10 HATCH: an opening in the deck through which passengers can pass

11 HEAD: the forepart of a vessel; bow

12 KEEL: center of lower-most portion of ship; extends throughout with many frames attached which provides stability. (“keel over”—means to overturn)

13 MAST: long pole of wood or metal set upright on a ship to support the sails/rigging
