Marine Transportation

Airboats An airboat, also known as a fanboat, is a flat- bottomed vessel propelled in a forward direction by an aircraft- type propeller and powered by either an aircraft or automotive engine.

Canoes A canoe is a lightweight narrow boat, typically pointed at both ends and open on top, propelled by one or more seated or kneeling paddlers facing the direction of travel using a single-bladed paddle.

Houseboat A houseboat is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a home. Some houseboats are not motorized, because they are usually moored, kept stationary at a fixed point and often tethered to land to provide utilities.

Hydrofoil A hydrofoil is a lifting surface, or foil, which operates in water. They are similar in appearance and purpose to airfoils used by airplanes. Boats using hydrofoil technology are also simply termed hydrofoils. As speed is gained, hydrofoils lift the boat's hull out of the water, decreasing drag and thus allowing for greater speeds.

Sailboat A sailboat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails.

Fishing Trawler A fishing trawler, also known as a dragger, is a commercial fishing vessel designed to operate fishing trawls. Trawling is a method of fishing that involves actively dragging or pulling a trawl through the water behind one or more trawlers.

Tugboat A tugboat (tug) is a boat that maneuvers vessels by pushing or towing them. Tugs move vessels that either should not move themselves, such as ships in a crowded harbor or a narrow canal, or those that cannot move by themselves, such as barges, disabled ships, log rafts, or oil platforms.

Directional Terminology Port - The left side of a boat looking forward. Starboard - The right side of a boat when looking forward. Stern - The after part of the boat. Bow - The forward part of a boat.
