Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Management Structure

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May NA1: Highlights of first year achievements Transition meeting – April 2006 at CERN –Smooth transition between EGEE and EGEE-II, 20 new partners, 2 new activities –All boards and procedures in place from the outset Set up of a common fund (1% from all partners’ budget) –Support for long term sustainability plans –Related Projects Liaison Office –iSGTW newsletter editor –Common media work (stands at events, video updates, dissemination material) –Additional security manpower

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May NA1: Highlights of first year achievements (cont.) Escalation procedure put in place to help improve responsiveness of partners gLite restructuring task force in place to address portability issues Gender Action activities (deliverable produced, events – Grids for Kids day) EGEE conference and User Forum are now mutli- project events –EGEE’06, Geneva, September 2006: Business track, attendance by numerous related project and users of the Grid.

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Registered Collaborating Projects Applications improved services for academia, industry and the public Support Actions key complementary functions Infrastructures geographical or thematic coverage 24 projects have registered as on February 2007: web pageweb page

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May EGEE recommendations Project management has ensured that the recommendations made at final EGEE review have been taken into account in the first year of EGEE-II –Balance application requirements versus technology opportunities:  Technical Coordination Group, Collaborating projects, marked increase in the use of the Infrastructure by new application domains –Assess impact factors towards the future and demonstrate persistence of the production Grid infrastructure:  Long term sustainability plans, increased work with industry, business and new application domains –Invest in staff retention  Awareness at institute level, feedback received from partners to ensure staff and experience retention, limitations of temporrary contracts

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Deliverables and milestones Effective review procedure in place (JRA2) All PM1-PM12 deliverables submitted –Rescheduled DNA3.2 (Commercial Survey) to PM15 (delay in finding suitable company) –4 th quarterly report merged with periodic report for rationalisation purposes First contract amendment signed in November: –Administrative formalities addressed; no changes to the Programme of Work All Activity meetings: –August 2006: Follow-up of final EGEE review recommendations and EGEE’06 conference preparation –January 2007: Focus on Middleware and its re-structuring. Several parallel sessions on technical progress

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Provisional Financial Status 20,908,217 € requested in first period –40% of project budget (EC and partner funding) 52,608,105€ –Based on:  41 audited Forms C (49%),  27 Internal Costs Claims covering Q1-Q4 (32%)  16 Internal Cost Claims for the period Q1-Q2/Q3 (19%). –Final report due mid-May 5,837 Person Months consumed –53% of total budgeted Person Months

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Provisional Financial Status Over 1100 members registered 486 FTEs (53% of total budget) Legend: F: Funded U: Unfunded PM: Person Months FTE: Full time equiv Funded PM (52% of Funded PM budget) 3216 PM Matching (56% matching PM budget)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Issues Manpower –Late signature of contract meant a loss of manpower in some institutes at the start of the project (due to employment contract continuity issues) –Unassigned manpower in some activities – discussed and mitigated at PMB level  Key people often have responsibilities in multiple projects –High turnover (short term contracts): issues of staff retention

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Issues (Cont.) Consortium Size –139 “partners” (Contractors and JRU members) –Financial reporting difficult to achieve in short timeframe imposed –Communication between management and project members  Monthly Director’s letters  Newsletters –Difficult to monitor tasks of ALL partners in ALL activities  Intend to expand on partners reviews in 2 nd year (see SA1 and JRA2 presentations)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Project Status - Bob Jones - EGEE-II 1st EU Review May Summary EGEE-II has started successfully and has produced results –All activities are operational –Effective management structures in place –Exceeded most of the targets defined for the first year All milestone have been met and all deliverables have been produced EGEE is THE largest multi-disciplinary research Grid infrastructure in the world EGEE has led the way in building a consistent European view of grid infrastructure via a number of related projects and international collaborations
