The London Blitz SS6H7: The student will explain conflict and change in Europe to the 21 st century

The Battle of Britain The battle was waged in the skies over the English Channel and England's eastern and southern coast in 1940 and 1941.

WWII Destruction in London

Blackouts During WWII During the war, everyone had to cover their windows and doors at night (before sunset) with heavy blackout curtains, cardboard or paint. They needed to prevent any glimmer of light from escaping and aiding enemy aircraft during the bombing raids.

Gas Masks  Gas masks were issued to all children as a precaution against attack by gas bombs.

How many people were evacuated during the war?  By the end of the Second World War around 3.5 million people, mainly children had experienced evacuation.  No one was forced to go but parents were encouraged by posters and told that their children would be safer from German bombs if they moved to the country.

Children Leave London  Children arrived to their destination Tired, hungry, and uncertain about their future.  The children left their parents and home behind and tried to fit in with host families in the countryside.  Many children were sent to the United States.

The Children’s Carol Setting: December 1940 Plot: The story of "The Children's Carol", centers on two young English war orphans Tess and Pip, who come to stay with the Baldwin sisters over the Christmas holidays. Having lost their parents and being scarred by their experiences in the London Blitz, the Baldwin sisters ask Olivia, if the Walton's would mind taking the children in the hope that a large and loving family environment will help the children overcome their horrific experiences.the London Blitz
