5 Information Age Jobs n Why work ethic is so important n Employers seek good work ethic n Technical skills are important n Work ethic just as important and difficult to find

6 History of Work Ethic Definition – cultural norm that places a positive value on doing a good job. It makes us feel good when a job is done well. Influenced by interaction with family, peers and significant adults The appraisal of a job well done is based on some on else’s perspective.

Work Ethics How one feels about their job, career or vocation and how one does his or her job or responsibilities Includes: attitude, behavior, respect, communication and interaction with others. Demonstrates who and what we are as a person 7

Work Ethic Characteristics Honesty Accountability Responsibility Integrity Dependability Respectable Treatment of others 8

Business and Industry Expectations Attendance – arrives and leaves on time, notifies when going to be absent Character- loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, dependability, reliability, initiative, self discipline and self responsibility 9

Expectations continued Teamwork – respects the rights of others, respects confidentiality, is a team worker, is cooperative, is assertive, displays a customer service attitude, seeks opportunities for continuous learning, demonstrates mannerly behavior. Appearance – displays appropriate dress, grooming, hygiene and etiquette (rules of behavior) 10

Expectations continued Attitude / self esteem – demonstrates a positive attitude, appears self confident, has realistic expectations of self Productivity – follows safety practices, conserves materials, keeps work area neat and clean, follow directions and procedures, makes up any assignments punctually, and participates 11

Expectations continued Organization – has skills in management of time and stress, demonstrates flexibility with change Communication – displays appropriate nonverbal (eye contact, body language) and oral (listening, telephone etiquette, grammar) skills 12

Expectations continued Cooperation - displays leadership skills, appropriately handles criticism, conflicts and complaints, demonstrates problem solving capability, maintains appropriate relationships with supervisors and peers, follow chain of command. Respect – deals appropriately with cultural/racial diversity, does not engage in harassment of any kind 13
