Evaluating Student Presentations Speaking Intensive Workshop

Constructing the Assignment Construct the assignment to meet the needs of the course How will it be graded? What percentage of the course grade will it be? Which features will be evaluated?

Constructing the Assignment Which criteria will be used for evaluation? When will feedback be given? Will an evaluation form be used? Who will conduct the evaluation?

Constructing the Evaluation Form Start with expectations of presentation Develop a strategic plan for grouping items Incorporate usable and operational language Select scales consistent with pedagogical goals

Constructing the Evaluation Form Consider placement and structure of comments Consult and draw from other evaluation forms Balance written and numerical feedback Develop a plan for grading in real time

In-Class Preparation Establish clear and realistic expectations for student presentations Discuss specific needs of assignment with class Distribute and discuss evaluation form with class Encourage students to make appointments at the Speaking Center

Other Suggestions Discuss specific requirements for assignment with Speaking Center Base your evaluation on comments from a Speaking Center consultant Practice using your evaluation form with sample speeches Incorporate peer assessment into your own evaluation
