What is IoT? Internet of Things(IoT) can be described as connecting everyday objects like smart-phones, Internet TVs, sensors and actuators. They are linked together enabling new forms of communication between things and people and between things themselves. Various devices in the home like air conditioner, lightings, home security and entertainment systems are now being connected to the internet.

Introduction In this paper, the experimenters collect real-life data as if living in their own house, not in a laboratory. We will discuss an overview and detailed sensor arrangement of the Ubiquitous Home.

Overview Ubiquitous home was constructed in National Institute of Information and Communication Technology in Japan. It consists of a living room, dining-kitchen, study room, bed room, washroom and bathroom.

Overview A Japanese-style room for remotely living family members. Network Operating Center(NOC) between the apartment and Japanese-style room.

Room Arrangement

Sensor Management Each room has cameras and microphones.

Floor Pressure sensors Floor pressure sensors are installed throughout the flooring. 18cm x 18cm detection units Used to track residents Detect furniture positions

Sensor Management Floor pressure sensor

Infrared Sensors Installed at the top of the entrance door At the foot positions in the kitchen and in the corridor Detect human movement

RFID systems Two Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) systems are installed. Area-type RFID uses 315 MHz Installed over the ceiling of each room Detect the entrance of RFID tags into the room Gate-type RFID uses 2.45 GHz Embedded inside the wall around each room entrance.

Accelerometers Four accelerometers are attached to back of the bedroom floor in four corners Detect human behavior to higher precision

Displays Plasma display panels and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and speakers are installed throughout the Ubiquitous home. Provide residents with video and audio content

Sensor Arrangement

Distributed Environment Action Database (DEAD) Aim is to obtain information about the behavior of residents Patterns should be recognized Historical information is needed in order to realize the services and provide them dynamically according to the situation

Distributed Environment Action Database (DEAD) DEAD stores and manages all the sensor information Structures information on people-to-people, people- to-appliance and people-to-service interaction obtained from sensors and other devices.

Architecture of DEAD system

Issues Home appliances and their functions are designed independently by their manufacturers Difficult to communicate with products of other manufacturers

Networked Appliances Collaboration UKARI-Core, a novel communication middleware for networked home appliances It can discover and connect appropriate functional elements(FEs) from the networked appliances dynamically FEs are connected as a virtual appliance to provide service to the residents

Virtual Appliance connecting FEs

Networked Appliances Collaboration Functional Elements(FEs) are defined based on  type of media  information processing For example, AudioGenerate is a type of FE It creates audio-type information An FE of microphone belongs to this type A network appliance may have a single or multiple FEs

Networked Appliances Collaboration Functional Elements(FEs) communicate with the help of middleware A virtual monitoring system uses the FE of image capture from the digital still camera and the FE of image display from the television set The infrared sensor in the door can be used to start this service with the help of UKARI-Core

Conclusion The services offered by ubiquitous home not only helps the persons with disabilities and elderly people, but also helps the whole family It can be extended to various types of devices such as home robots Resource sharing and user accessibility of functional elements can be added in the future work
