788.11J Presentation “The Aware Home” Presented by Alex Morison

The Environment A single house –Two identical and independent living spaces with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, one office, kitchen, dining room, living room, and laundry room –Shared basement with home entertainment area –Multiple integrated sensors Video (eye/head tracking) Audio (separation of audio sources) Pressure (smart floor)

The Goals A ubiquitous (ever-present) computing environment using multiple sensor modalities. –Video, audio, pressure, etc. Integration of sensors (video, audio, pressure, etc.) into the everyday home Build computational context-based awareness Evaluate context-based awareness through user interaction

Context-Based Awareness Context-based awareness refers to information that changes meaning due to the situation. Example: –Two people are approaching each other from opposite directions with converging trajectories at a medium pace (i.e., jog). Situation 1: This occurs at noon on a Monday outside of Dreese Laboratories on Ohio State University Main campus Situation 2: This occurs at 1am on a Saturday at a west campus parking lot on Ohio State University Main campus Situation or Context IS important

The Challenge Integration of computer (literal machine) and human (context machine) together to support human activities at home.

The Current Directions Assistance of elderly persons by remote supervision/observation –Remote monitoring of persons that may require emergency assistance Finding lost objects –Radio tags –Fusion of multiple sensors to locate object –Example: person identified as having object using RF. Person last seen at entrance using smart floor. Conclude, the person left with the object. Security of personal information

Innovation The Aware Home is a relatively new and interesting test bed for exploring the next boundary between people and technology. Using sensor technology to try to understand the everyday variety of activities associated with a home.

Is Now the Right Time? Sensor technology is advancing becoming better and cheaper with new methods for extracting richer information Large population of older individuals makes remote monitoring a desirable technology –People are living longer –Desire to remain independent BUT! How do you build context into a computer which is an inherently literal minded thing?
