Christopher Cronin © 2012  Mid-1990s through 2012: called “MARC for Acquisitions”  Gets resources with “good enough” cataloging to the shelf ASAP  Frees up copy cataloger time for clearing backlogs, and attending to hidden and special collections  Criteria for what can be finished in Acquisitions has been continually broadened:  2007/08: 38,923 records were finalized in Acquisitions  2010/11: 60,002 records were finalized in Acquisitions Why “Rapid Cataloging”?

Christopher Cronin © 2012  Easier to say what it isn’t. The criteria excludes:  Foreign language records  9 specific call number ranges (music, atlases, kids lit, etc.)  Elvl 8 and Elvl M  Absence of or incomplete 050 or 090  Absence of at least one LCSH  Does not treat RDA any differently than AACR2  OCLC validation will provide some degree of assurance that core RDA elements are populated  Criteria currently functions like a checklist  This summer, refocusing training on assessing the quality of the metadata, not just the presence or absence of MARC fields. What is “Rapid Cataloging”?

Christopher Cronin © 2012 UChicago

Christopher Cronin © 2012  Pre-test RDA training in summer 2010 – included original and copy cataloging  Post-test BIBCO and NACO “refresher” in February 2011  Regular monthly meetings of original catalogers to discuss RDA issues  June 2012: formal NACO RDA training via PCC Training

Christopher Cronin © 2012 Next Steps for UChicago

Christopher Cronin © 2012  Developing user testing on RDA reproduction records.  Relationships between RDA data and our faceted catalog interface: Content, Media and Carrier Types & their potential for integration into facets  Reciprocal learning for catalogers and assessment colleagues Building a Culture of Assessment for Metadata

Christopher Cronin © 2012  October 2010-May 2011: all RDA copy reviewed by Original Cataloging  May 2011-present: accept RDA copy as-is Impact on Copy Cataloging

Christopher Cronin © 2012  Re-think impact on copy cataloging  July 2012: training copy catalogers on creating RDA records for new editions and some no-copy literary works  Evaluate impact on authorities processing and DBM generally  Evaluate impact on systems design for Kuali-OLE ( and VuFindhttp://  Continuing learning about Semantic Web, linked data, alternatives to MARC Formats  Share expertise by contributing to formal PCC reviews of new RDA institutions Next Steps for UChicago

Christopher Cronin © 2012 Next Steps for You
