JOB DESCRIPTION  Computer hardware engineers design, create, and test various components within a computer as well as a computer system itself  Create advances in technology by pushing computer hardware in a new, innovative direction

REQUIRED TRAINING  High school diploma  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering for an entry-level position  Master’s degree in Computer Engineering for some firms or specialized jobs  Doctoral degree for positions in research

SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS  Creativity- design new types of hardware and computer technologies  Analytical Skills- analyze various equipment in order to find a way to improve upon it  Critical-thinking Skills- use reasoning and logic in order to create solutions, identify both strengths and flaws, and verify goals  Problem-solving Skills- find a problem in computer hardware, create a solution and implement it in the best way possible  Speaking Skills- work in teams, communicate your ideas and solutions to other members

TYPICAL WAGES  In 2014, the median wages for a computer hardware engineers was $108,430  $52.13 per hour  Bottom 10 percent received less than $63,970  Top 10 percent received more than $150,130

JOB OUTLOOK  From 2012 to 2022, employment is expected to grow 7 percent (slower than most occupations)  Fewer computer hardware engineers will be needed due to innovations that usually happen in software rather than hardware  Those with higher education or knowledge have better prospects when it comes to jobs
