Our Town: Bishop’s Castle

We are here: Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire, United Kingdom

The Town Hall In the picture, you can see the 18 th Century Bishop’s Castle Town Hall. At the moment it is having work done, such as repairing the windows and burying a time capsule. The time capsule is going to be opened in 2074.

The Parish Church The church was made in Medieval times. It was first built in 1291 and was rebuilt At Christmas time we go from the school and sing with our choir. The children in the choir are aged 8 to 11 years.

Inside the Church The altar and a stained glass window.

The Bishop’s Castle The castle is in ruins. It was destroyed in the 1600’s. The town is named after the castle. The Bishop of Hereford built the castle during the Norman Conquest about 1000 years ago.

The House on Crutches The House on Crutches is a museum of the town. It collects old items of the town to put on show. It is about 500 years old. The House on Crutches is one of many black and white, oak-beamed houses in Bishop’s Castle.

The Police Station The police in Bishop’s Castle are very helpful and will come as quick as possible when you need them. West Mercia means the West Midlands, which is part of England. Mercia is the old Saxon word for this area and was an ancient kindom. The police station is one of many modern buildings in the town.

The Park The park is sometimes a fun place for children but some older children are not always nice to us. Is this the same for you?

Bishop’s Castle Community College This is the secondary school that some of us will be going to in a year and a half. Children attend this school from the ages of 11 to 18.

Bishop’s Castle Primary School This is the front of our school. Children come to this school from the ages 4 to 11. We like the big, brightly coloured sign! You can find us on Google Earth

Outside our classroom This is the terrace outside our classroom. It has sails to protect us from the sun. We do get sun in England! The sails also shelter us from the rain. We have had a lot of rain recently.

A classroom This is a typical classroom at our school. Ours is currently a building site. Where have all the children gone?

Found them! Some of the children of Class 4 are at Forest School. In the picture they are working together to build a bent wood shelter from willow. All the children of the school go to woodland once a week for a morning or afternoon and work outdoors.

Our website: We are Class 4 – you can see some of the things that we do on our website. We will be sending you messages soon – we just have to finish writing them!
