1 What will you do with it? A group project
A piece of land What will you do with it? A group project

2 A piece of land There has been a terrible disaster on earth! Most people got to leave the planet before it was too late. Before it was your turn to board the spaceship, you heard about a newfound continent that is still healthy and intact. You, your group and three other groups decide to go there instead of space. Each group got a piece of land

3 What a wonderful place it turned out to be
What a wonderful place it turned out to be! So here you and your group are, owning a piece of land on a new, untouched continent… Now… what will you do with this piece of land? You will have to live here for the rest of your life, so, let’s make this the best place ever!

4 How fun is it to be alone? You get a brilliant idea! Let's build a community! But communities need people in order to work… So, you need to get the people from the other groups to come and move to your community. You also know there will come more people from time to time and of course, you want them to choose and stay in your community.

5 Wait… what? You see that the other three groups also are going to build a community! You decide to talk with the other groups. There is a meeting and at the meeting, it is decided that you are each going to build a community and after a few years (at the end of this project) everyone will vote for what community is the best. The community that gets the most votes will get all the inhabitants and everyone will follow their rules.

6 Let’s do it!

7 But how? You build your community inside Minecraft Educational Edition. You need to do this because other groups are going to visit your community and see if they would like to live there before they vote. Of course, you want to visit a community before deciding if you want to live there or not, so you will visit the other groups as well. You can only work inside the game when your higher power (in this case, your teacher) is in the game (so only during lessons).

8 But how? During this project, you will have contact with a higher power (your teacher). Your higher power can decide the weather, teleport you to different places and a lot more. Your higher power will also make sure that you stay on your piece of land and don’t visit other communities before the last lesson. You can always chat with your higher power – but have in mind that everyone will see it. Your higher power can also come and visit you and your group inside the game

9 You need to make some decisions
There are a lot of things that need to be decided outside the game – this means that not everyone in your group must play and build inside the game. Below you see four categories; a quick look, law and order, welfare, and life and buildings. Under each category, there are a few topics that you need to talk about in your group A quick look Law and order Life and buildings Welfare

10 A quick look • Your community needs a name • Your community needs a flag • Your community needs a national Anthem + when do you sing it? • What kind of community are you building? Farm, city, fantasy…?

11 What is a community without law and order? = Chaos!
• Laws and social rules. 10 laws are enough. • Punishments for breaking the law • Which are the worst crimes and how are they punished? What will the convicts do? • Social rank – who is at the top and who is at the bottom, or is everyone equal? • Ruler – Queen/king? President? Emperor? No ruler – you vote about everything? How much power should the leader have? • Who will decide on who will be police, teachers etc? • How do the people make decisions? Will you have town meetings? • What if new settlers attack – how will you defend yourself? Is military service compulsory? For who?

12 Welfare • Are you going to have money or trade? How will that work?
• Healthcare – Everyone goes for free? Only children? Everyone pay? – think about taxes! • Education – mandatory? When do you start school (how young)? When do you stop (how old)? School every day of the week? Between 8-17? Which subjects are going to be mandatory? • How do you take care of sick people and older people? • Taxes • wages – which workgroup is most important? Remember that economy is a big part of a community, the more tax people pay, the more money the community has for free healthcare, education and care for sick people, older people, and unemployed people.

13 Life and buildings • What kind of buildings does a community need? • What kind of buildings are you going to build? • What can people do in their free time? • What kind of shops are you going to have? • What traditions will you bring with you? Christmas, Easter, midsummer, festivals? • How will everyone contribute to the community?

14 Things to discuss with your group before you start:
How do you collaborate? Who will do what? Are there some topics that you all need to agree on, and some that it is okay for one person to decide? How do you decide how the community will look like (parks, trees, houses, garden etc)? Who will build inside the game? Who will paint the flag? How do you take the decisions? Can you divide the work between you so you all have different things to do? What will you do if you can’t agree with your group? There might occur problems within your group – then what do you do? Do you vote or do you do something else? Things to discuss with your group before you start:

15 There are a few things I want you to do inside the game:
When you have built a building, you should put up a sign that says what kind of building it is, who build it, why you built it. You should take a lot of photos and put them in a portfolio. At the end of this project, you will export your portfolio and send it to me (your teacher). It is important to remember history, and you are creating history right now! That is why you should write everything down in a book

16 Other things you need to know
Programming/coding is cool but not necessary. I want you to write in a journal after each lesson. During this project, you will come across words that you are unfamiliar with – write them down and look them up. On our last lesson, you (you and your group) will give a short presentation and tell the other groups about your community. I want you to watch 4 short videos on youtube. You can watch them on your own or in your group

17 The journal You write in it after each esson
You write in the same document = One document! You hand it in when the project is finished.

18 The four videos How to create a country:
Epic how – how to create your own country Why some countries are poor and others rich I want to be very clear here! No religion is better than another! Democracy – A short introduction

19 The presentation Tell us about your community and what you have come up with when it comes to the four categories. It is okay if only one person talks The presentation does not have to be long You don’t need to show anything After all the presentations, and after everyone has visited all the communities, you will vote. The group with the most votes will win

20 Step-by-step 1. your group sit down and discuss how you are going to work on this project – see the questions under ” Things to discuss with your group before you start” 2. You start working a) Some of you work inside the game, building and creating your community b) Some of you work outside the game, planning, discussing and making decisions about the four categories; a quick look, law and order, welfare, and life and buildings 3. You write in a journal after each lesson. You write in one document and hand it in after the project is finished 3. You give a short presentation 4. You visit the other communities inside Minecraft Educational Edition 5. You vote for the best community
