Meaning  Some verbs change meaning depending upon the past tense in which it is used

AVOIR  IMP = ‘had/owned’  “Je n’avais pas assez temps.”  PC = had/got/received  “J’ai eu un accident” (I had/got into)

CONNAÎTRE  IMP = knew/was familiar with  “Vous la connaissiez bien”  PC = met  “Vous avez connu Michel hier”

DEVOIR  IMP = was supposed to [whether you did or not]  “Tu devais partir à midi”  PC = must have/had to  Tu as dû partir à midi

POUVOIR  IMP = could/was capable [whether did or not]  Il pouvait mentir  PC = could/was able to/managed to {neg = couldn’t/wasn’t able to}  Il a pu mentir  Il n’a pas pu mentir

SAVOIR  IMP = knew  Elle savait l’adresse  PC = learned/found out  Elle a su l’adresse
