3 The perfect tense is used to describe events that happened in the past. These events are completed actions which means that they are over and done with. eg. J’ai joué au foot = I played football The perfect tense is formed with the auxiliary verbs avoir and être + the past participle. Most verbs go with avoir.

4 THE PRESENT TENSE OF AVOIR j’ai (I) tu as (you) il/elle/on a (he/she/we/one) nous avons (we) vous avez (you) ils/elles ont (they)

5 THE PRESENT TENSE OF ÊTRE je suis (I) tu es (you) il/elle/on est (he/she/we/one) nous sommes (we) vous êtes (you) ils/elles sont (they)

6 Most verbs make the past participle by using these regular patterns: -er verbs: + é jou(er)  joué -re verbs: + u répond(re)  répondu -ir verbs: + i fin(ir)  fini

7 However, most common verbs are irregular! Avoir(to have)  euboire(to drink)  bu Faire(to do/make)  faitLire(to read)  lu mettre(to put)  mis prendre(to take)  pris Recevoir(to receive)  reçu Voir(to see)  vu vouloir(to want to)  voulu

8 Some common verbs which take avoir: battre – battu to beat conduire – conduit to drive connaître – connu to know construire – construit to build courir – couru to run croire – cru to believe dire – dit to say/tell

9 dormir – dormi to sleep écrire – ecrit to write être – été to be offrir – offert to offer ouvrir – ouvert to open pouvoir – pu to be able to rire – ri to laugh savoir – su to know sentir - senti to feel/smell suivre - suivi to follow tenir – tenu to hold

14 EXAMPLES Je suis allé(e) en ville – I went into town Tu es venu(e) chez moi – you came to my house Il est descendue la rue – he went down the street Elle est montée l’escalier – she went up the stairs Nous sommes allés au marché – we went to the market Vous êtes arrivé(e/es) à la gare – you arrived at the station. Ils sont morts – they died Elles sont nées – they were born NB. If it is feminine then you need to add an e to the past participle. In the plural add an s
