le passé composé the past preterit

Le passé composé (PC) Used to describe specific past events.  Example: I played; I did play; I have played A compound tense (2 parts to the verb)  Helping Verb (HV)  Past Participle (PP)

The Helping Verb (HV) For most verbs, the HV is avoir j’ai nous avons tu asvous avez il/elle/on a ils/elles ont

The Past Participle (PP) To form the PP of regular verbs:  Take off the infinitive ending  Add the PC ending -er → -éjouer → joué -ir → -i finir → fini -re → -uvendre → vendu

Example PC conjugation j’ai vendunous avons vendu tu as venduvous avez vendu il/elle/on a venduils/elles ont vendu The PP stays the same for the entire conjugation—only the HV changes!

To form sentences in the PC Subject + HV + PP (+rest of sentence) Examples:  Present Tense: Je mange → PC: J’ai mangé.  Present Tense: Nous choisissons le film. → PC: Nous avons choisi le film.

PC in the negative form The negative (ne…pas) will only go around the HV  Example: Je n’ai pas mangé. Nous n’avons pas choisi le film.  Example PC conjugation in the negative form: je n’ai pas vendunous n’avons pas vendu tu n’as pas venduvous n’avez pas vendu il/elle/on n’a pas venduils/elles n’ont pas vendu
