Causes of World War I BBetween peace congresses convened regularly in Europe leading many to believe that progress had made war a thing of the past! BBy 1914 this belief comes crashing down as the world plunges into “The Great War”—The war to end all wars. Why? TToday’s analogy will be focusing on the 4 “MAIN” causes of the WWI and their comparison to 4 lit matches.

In the 19 th and 20 centuries, Europe and other nations around the world competed for colonies The competition led to conflict among nations Match #1- Imperialism

Devotion to the interests and culture of one nation Often led to competition with other nations Match #2- Nationalism

Development of armed forces and their use as a tool of diplomacy Arose out of nationalism and imperialism Match #3- Militarism
