Explaining the game of football By: Taimi Tutogi

Positions of the game In the game of football there are many different positions that can be played both on Offense and Defense. Though all the positions of the game are different and play different roles they are all essential to the one common goal which is beating the opponent.

Offense Offense are usually known as “The good Guys” the guys that you usually see catching and running the ball or the guys throwing the ball. The objective of the offense is to try and drive the ball to the end zone and score 6 points, but if they cannot move the ball at least 10 yards in 4 plays they are forced to turn the ball over. The main objective is to score but a key role in scoring is getting 1 st downs which allows you to receive another set of 4 plays.

Offensive Positions Quarterbacks: The quarterbacks job is to throw the ball to the receivers, this is the easiest way to get a first down. Quarterbacks are usually athletic and have a strong and accurate arm Wide Receivers: Wide Receivers are the ones that try and get open so that they can catch the ball being thrown from the quarterback. These guys are usually taller and faster guys who have exceptional hands Running Backs: The running backs job is to take the ball and run with it for as many positive yards as possible. Running backs are mostly really fast and have great balance Offensive linemen: O-Linemen are used mainly to protect the quarterback when throwing and the running back when running. These guys should be the bigger guys of your team mainly because they will be going against other big guys.

Defense Like offense the defense also has been known to be the “bad guys” The defense are the giys tackling the guys with the ball or trying to get the ball out, to put their offense back on the field. The objective of the defense is to stop the offense and give them the least amount of yards possible. Getting a sack or tackle for loss increases the defenses chance of getting the ball back for their team. If the defense can stop the opposing teams offense in 4 downs the other team must give the ball up and this allows the team who was on defense, their offense a chance to score.

Defensive Positions Saftey: The safety is the last line of defense on any spectrum, he must be able to stop a run if it breaks through or turn and run if the ball is thrown deep. These guys should be faster more athletic guys. Linebackers: These guys play behind the defensive line and should be able to drop into coverage if needed but also be able to stuff the run if it’s a run. LB’S are usually the bigger athletic guys. Cornerbacks: A corners job is mainly to cover the receiver if he goes out for a pass, sticking with him every step of the route is his job. The corner like the safety should be faster and athletic. Defensive line: These guys are mainly to stop the run. They go against the bigger guys on offense and try to tackle the runner with the ball or the quarterback. Like offensive linemen they should be big boys and should be able to tackle.

Specialists Specialists consists of the snapper, the kicker, and the holder. They are usually able to play all three but all have essential jobs and play an important role in winning a game

Snapper, Holder, Kicker The snapper: the snapper should be able to zip a ball back to the punter or the holder when punting the ball or going for an extra point The holder: This guy must be able to hold a ball still when the kicker is kicking. Kicker: The kicker should be able to kick a ball through the goal post, and should be able to punt a ball far which means he must have a strong and accurate leg.
