Treating Mental Disorders Four types of mental health professionals - psychiatrists, clinical psychiatrists, social workers, and mental health counselors. Four types of doctors, and their practice 1.Psychiatrist- doctor who treats mental disorders. Can prescribe medication. 2.Neurologist- doctor who treats physical disorders of the nervous system. 3.Clinical psychologist- doctor who is trained to treat behavior that is not normal. 4.Psychiatric social worker- doctor who is trained to help people with mental disorders and to help their families adjust.

Treating mental disorders Three methods used to treat mental disorders 1.Psychotherapy 2.Drug therapy 3.Hospitalization Four types of psychotherapy 1. Insight Therapy 2.Cognitive and behavioral therapy 3.Group therapy 4.Drug therapy

Locating community Resources Three reasons that people don’t seem to get help is because… 1:People don’t recognize the signs of a mental disorder. 2:They may have been told they could overcome the problem. (WillPower) 3:They may not know where to get help.

Types of Mental Health Professionals Psychiatrist is a physician who can diagnose and treat mental disorders. Can prescribe medications. Clinical psychologists are trained to recognize and treat behavior that is not normal. Socials workers help people with mental disorders and their families to accept and adjust to an illness. Mental Health Counselors focus on specific problems or work with specific groups of people.

Kinds of treatments Psychotherapy Insight Therapy- helps people better understand their behaviors. With the information they have been given they might be able to change their behaviors. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy- helps a person identify situations, objects, or thoughts that trigger abnormal behaviors. The goal is to develop new behaviors. Group Therapy- people meet other people with the similar disorders. The group members work together to develop new coping skills.

Kinds of Therapy (continued) Drug Therapy- Doctors prescribe certain drugs for mental disorders. The drugs relieve symptoms and normal behavior can begin. Hospitalization- Sometimes people with mental disorders need constant supervision or are a danger to themselves and/or others. The patients receive therapy in the hospital. The staff helps patients prepare to leave the hospital. After the patients return home, sometimes social workers will come and check on them.

Dealing with Setbacks Everyone experiences setbacks in life. It is important to be able to bounce back from a setback and move on towards your goals. Use this worksheet to think about how you typically respond to setbacks and how you might respond in a more positive way in the future.

Dealing with Setbacks Think of a setback as an isolated event. I see the setback as a sign that I am a failure. YesNo I let a setback in one area of my life affect the other areas of my life. YesNo I tell myself that i simply did not succeed at one particular subject. YesNo

Dealing with Setbacks Recognize that a setback is temporary. Is there a different path I can take to reach my goal? YesNo Can I arrange for a second opportunity to try to reach my goal, either now or in the future? YesNo Can I modify my goal somewhat? YesNo
