1 Roles of the Mental Health Team:
1 - Psychiatric Nurse: - R.N., or B.S.N. and post graduated course in mental health. Manage client care; administer and monitor medications; Assist with psychiatric and physical treatments. Teach clients and families, client advocate, and asses and intervene with clients‘ problems. Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

2-Social worker: Bachelor degree in social sciences. Conduct family and community assessment group and family therapy, and act as liaisons (interrelations) to place clients after discharge. 3- Psychiatrist: A licensed physician who specializes in psychiatry. Admitting clients, prescribing medications & and make diagnoses. Administering ECT therapy. Conducting individual and family therapy. Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

4- Psychologist: B.A. degree in clinical psychology. Administer psychometric tests that aid in the diagnosis of disorders Conducts psychotherapy, not prescribe or administer medications. Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

5- CPN – Community Psychiatric Nurse Mental Health nurses with further training in mental illness in the community. 6- OT – Occupational Therapist Qualified members of staff who offer activities that aim to improve the quality of life for people with mental health problems. 5 Interventions Aplied by Psychiatric Nurse:
1- Counseling: Assist the client in improving or regaining their coping abilities, communication skills, problem solving, crisis intervention, & stress management. 2- Self-care activities: Encourage independence within the client capacity. 3- Environment therapy: Provides a therapeutic environment to modify behaviors, teach skills, &encourage communication. 6 4- Psychological interventions: Giving medications, observation and teaching. 5- Case management: Participate in client care and coordinates the care provided by others. Psychiatric diagnosis: Accurate description and classification of mental disorders according diagnostic criteria. In Palestine : (DSM- V) and (ICD10). Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 6

Treatment Prognosis Funding. Referral &Indications for psychiatric treatment: Clients referred to mental health services via two ways: - Voluntarily seek for treatment themselves. - Brought by others e.g. family, friends, or police Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

8 Reasons necessitate psychiatric treatment:
Symptoms are painful or intolerable Symptoms are unmanageable by the client or significant others. Disrupted daily function as a result of the disorder. Life crisis as suicidal attempts occurred. Crimes Are committed as a result of the disorder. Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 8

9 Recovery involve component of : - Acceptance of mental illness.
- Having a sense of hope about the future. There are three lines of recovery: Complete recovery: no need for treatment. Social recovery: retaining social roles and responsibilities. Out client recovery: discharge from but socially isolated Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

10 Student challenges regarding mental health fields:
*Fear of danger. *Self-doubt *Irritability Guide lines for students to face challenges: Read diagnosis before interaction with client. Select safe units and times for interactions  limited Physical contact with client. Give clear instructions to the client without frequent criticism for his behavior. 5. Give positive feedback to the client regarding strengths. 6. Establish therapeutic relationship, not personal or social relations with the client. 7. Seek for supervisor help for undesired feelings 8. Avoid predicting client progress, don't give promise for discharge. 9. 12 Legal – Ethical Issues:
1- The police protect the community from client's threat. 2- The client can be hospitalized involuntarily if he exhibit dangerous behavior after discharge. 3- Clients retain their civil rights upon their admission to hospital. 4- Non emergency seclusion (isolation) is ordered only by doctor. 5- full insighted client have the right to refuse treatment. 6- Client committed to crime is hospitalized for mental health assessment. 7- Mentally ill clients can sent to prison and treated there. 8- Nurses work in psychiatric settings must be aware of situations that may lead malpractice lawsuit Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing
