2 When help is needed? O Feeling trapped or worrying all the time O Feelings that affect sleep, eating habits, schoolwork or relationships. O Becoming involved with alcohol or other drugs. O Becoming increasingly aggressive, violent, or reckless.

3 Seeking Help O Asking for help is a sign of inner strength. O Serious disorders, compulsions, and addictions are complex and require professional intervention. O Sharing your thoughts with an objective person can be helpful. O Financial help to pay for care may be available.

4 Where to go for help? O Counselor – Mrs. Eisenhard and Mrs. Bemmes O School Psychologist – Mrs. Hils O Teachers – Dr. Nagelhout O Psychiatrist – Can prescribe medications. O Neurologist – Physical disorders of brain and nervous system. O Social Worker

5 Treatment Methods O Psycotherapy – an ongoing dialogue between a patient and a mental health professional. O Behavior Therapy – a treatment process that focuses on changing unwanted behaviors through rewards and reinforcements.

6 Treatment Methods O Cognitive Therapy – designed to identify and correct distorted thinking patterns that can lead to feelings and behaviors than can be destructive. O Family Therapy – helping the family function in more positive and constructive ways by exploring patterns in communication and providing support and education.

7 Treatment Methods O Group Therapy – treating a group of people who have similar problems. O Drug Therapy – using certain medications to treat or reduce symptoms of a mental disorder.

8 Review O What is behavior therapy? O Which mental health professional treats physical disorders of the brain? O Who might a teen reach out to at school about a mental health problem?
