Record in your agenda: No SS HW over the weekend Record in your agenda: No SS HW over the weekend ***Write out the questions on a Do Now paper with today’s date, then give your answers!*** Flashing back to 6 th grade geography: 1. What is the difference in relative location vs. absolute location? 2. Provide an example of relative location and an example of absolute location. 3. What are lines of latitude and lines of longitude? How are they measured? 4. Draw a diagram for latitude. 5. Draw another diagram for longitude. 6. What are the hemispheres of the Earth? In what hemispheres is the USA?

Relative location is the location of something in comparison to the location of something else. For example, if I said, "My house is near the school," that's a relative location. I'm telling you where my house is located relative to the school. Absolute location is the exact spot on the Earth where something is. When describing the absolute location, people use specific coordinates, like latitude and longitude. For example, the absolute location using latitude and longitude of the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. is 38° 53 ′ 35 ″ N, 77° 00 ′ 32 ″ W. Latitude is always written first and latitude and longitude are composed of degrees, minutes, and seconds.

Latitude Latitude refers to the distance north or south of the Equator measured in degrees up to 90 degrees. Latitude lines are imaginary lines that circle the Earth in an east-west direction and that are parallel to the Equator. The Equator has a value of 0 degrees latitude. Latitude lines are also called parallels.

Longitude Longitude refers to the distance measured in degrees east or west from an imaginary line (called the Prime Meridian) that goes from the North Pole to the South Pole and that passes through Greenwich, England. Longitude is measured in degrees up to 180 east or west of the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian has a value of 0 degrees longitude. Longitude lines are imaginary lines that circle the Earth in a north-south direction– lines of longitude “meet” at the top of the globe (the North Pole) and at the bottom of the globe (the South Pole). Lines of longitude are also referred to as meridians.

Latitude and Longitude together. Sketch a map of the world with labels similar to what you see in the image. Used together, latitude and longitude can identify a place’s absolute location.

The 0 degree line of latitude, the Equator, divides the earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

The 0 degree line of longitude, the Prime Meridian and the 180 degree line of longitude, divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres.

So, in what two hemispheres is the USA located?
