Rule! Never, ever any naked numbers! Always “dress” your measurements with units. Metric Measurement Scramble Be careful with the digital balances. Do NOT press or put heavy objects on balances.

Lab Goals and Procedures Team Goal: Complete each station with 100% quality in 10 minutes. – Transition between stations Respectfully – w/out disturbing any other teams – Re-set the location for next team Efficiently - On-task and performing at sites w/in 30 seconds

5 Stations Some are at your desk and others are at stations: 1.Length & Distance 2.Time 3.Mass 4.Solid Volume 5.Density (where it says measure 1 side, you need to measure all 3 sides: length, width, height)

1. Length & Distance (At Station #1) Length = the amount of vertical space an object takes up Distance = the degree or amount of separation between two points, lines, surfaces, or objects Base unit = meters (m) Inquiry Question: What is the effect of mass on kinetic energy as measured by the distance the cart can push the wood block? Hypothesis: If weights are added to a cart, then the kinetic energy will be ___________ and the block of wood will be ________________________. Ramp Wood Block CartMass (g)Distance Block moved (cm) Without weight With weights

2. Time – (At Desk) Time = a dimension in which events can be ordered from the past through the present into the future, and also the measure of durations of events and the intervals between themdimensionpastpresentfuture Base Unit = seconds (s) Inquiry Question: What is the effect of gender on average reaction time of Middle School students’ hands as measured by the amount of time needed to catch a dropped meter stick? StudentTrial 1 (s)Trial 2 (s)Average (s) Hypothesis: If a meter stick is dropped between a ________________ Middle School students’ thumb and forefinger, the reaction rate will be ____________________________________.

3. Mass – (At Station # 3) Mass = the amount of matter Base Unit = kilograms (Kg) Task: Measure the mass of a material without removing the material from the container.

4. Volume – (At Desk) Volume = the amount of space an object takes up Base unit = cubic meter (m 3 ) Important Conversion: 1 ml = 1 cm 3 Liquid Volume = space a substance takes up in a container Base Unit = liter (L) Task: Calculate the volumes for 2 materials: Regular Shape Irregular shape Remember! : Your eye should be level With the meniscus.

5. Density - (At Desk) Density = the amount of mass per unit of volume; d = m/v Base unit = gram per cubic centimeter g/cm 3 Density of water room temperature) = 1 g/cm 3 Inquiry Question: What effect does density have on whether or not a material will float in water? Hypothesis: If a material is _______ dense than water, then it ___________________ float in water. Directions: 1)Use balance to measure mass of each block in grams. 2)Use protractor/ruler to measure each side of blocks in cm. 3) Use a graduated cylinder to measure liquid volume (in mL). wood = ________ mL metal = __________ mL 4) Compare your liquid and solid volumes and calculate an average volume for each block. Wood average = ___________ mL Metal average = _______________ mL 5) Return to desk to do calculations. Density = mass/ volume

Volume of Blocks in Station 5 Volume = l x w x h Wood Block _______cm x _______cm x _______ cm Metal Block _______cm x _______cm x _______ cm

Teacher Supplies/Comments/Notes Station 1: Ramp (cardboard/books), car, weight, balance, block of wood, tape, meter stick Station 2: Meter sticks Station 3: Balance, two beakers- 1 with oats, 1 with liquid (water) Station 4: 2 graduated cylinders large enough to fit objects, shell, wood block Station 5: 2 blocks (wood, metal), meter stick, balance, 2 graduated cylinders large enough to hold blocks Station 3 (mass) and 4 (volume) need more notes, the activities are VERY short and fast. Station 3 (mass) – have kids weight empty beaker and items in beaker and subtract empty beaker to determine item masses.
