Am I a Copyright Cop? Kim Sloggett LBSC 5113 April 29, 2008

Or is that “INFRINGER”!

What is copyright? A copyright is the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something, be it a literary, musical, or artistic work.

Who should care about copyright? StudentsTeachers Library Media Specialists Administrators Anyone who creates or uses tangible forms of expression

Why should I care about copyright?

It is the law. U. S. Copyright Law U. S. Copyright Law Fair Use Guidelines Fair Use Guidelines

It is part of the curriculum. Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills: Instructional Technology Standard 8: Standard 8: The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology. Section 2: Section 2: The student understands copyright issues and adheres to copyright laws.

Other reasons: It is ethical. Others look to me to model respect for others’ possessions. I am responsible for educating others about copyright information. I might create something of worth that I don’t want everyone to copy!

What is the problem? Ignorance of the law Teachers do not learn copyright information from the right sources Misinterpretation of Fair Use policies

What happens then? Teachers ignore what they don’t comprehend. Teachers over-comply with the law and overlook fair use policies thereby using less effective teaching materials. Teachers disregard the law. (Hobbs, Jaszi & Aufderheide, 2007)

What can be done? Professional Development Continuing Education Become aware of current law Subscribe to an RSS feed, blog or forum regarding copyright law Ask a lawyer
