3 Instructional Partner The SLMS is an instructional Partner. The SLMS works with all stakeholders of the media center to create polices and procedures to ensure that the media program’s focuses on student learning. The SLMS is a leader in learning and educating others about new technology and resources. The job of the SLMS is wide reaching and addresses many needs within the school.

4 Instructional Partner Standards and Artifacts As an instructional partner, I will work with stakeholders to create an environment that is information rich and is focused on student learning. I will create lessons for teachers that provide them with the latest technology and resource information. I will build relationships with the community and become an advocate for student learning. Doing these things will ensure that I am an integral part of the instruction process. 5 Principal’s PowerPoint – The Principal’s PowerPoint is designed to provide the principal of a school with an overview of the media center. I can use this to demonstrate and how the media center impacts the school environment and student learning. Stakeholder’s Tips – Stakeholder’s Tips were designed to provide the media specialist with suggestions for working with stakeholders. By working with all th stakeholders of the media center, I can get a well-rounded picture of the needs of the media center. In-service Modules –The In-Service Modules demonstrate how the media specialist can be an instructional partner to teachers. By providing them with new and valuable resources, I am giving them new ideas and technology that they can take to their classrooms. Proposed Three Year Budget – By evaluating a proposed budget, I am demonstrating that I am looking forward to how the purchasing of resources impacts the school and student learning. 6 Information Specialist The SLMS is an Information Specialist The school library media specialist provides information, resources, technology, and learning tasks with the school community. The school library media specialist has the task of modeling and providing new technology. The school library media specialist is the guide to ethical use of information.

7 Information Specialist Standards and Artifacts As an information specialist in my school, I must be aware of the resources that are available within my media center and how to best use these in the classroom. I must also remain up to date on current technology. I need to understand how it works and how best to apply it. Understanding copyright laws and fair use policies area vital part of the SLMS’ job. I must be able to use information in an ethical manner and teach others as well. Artifacts Policy and Procedures Handbook Pathfinders Quikstart Guide Inservice Modules Collection Analysis Map

8 Examples of Being and Informational Specialist Pathfinders – In creating Pathfinders, I am able to provide teachers and students resources in a variety of formats which address content and information literacy standards. Reference Logs - Reference materials must be evaluated to ensure that they are valid, current, informational, accurate and that they fulfill a need. In evaluating the various types of reference materials, I have learned that a media specialist must not only know her collection in the media center, but must also have a wide knowledge of reference resources on the internet. Collection Analysis Map – Evaluating a collection is an important part of a media specialist’s job. In creating the Collection Analysis Map, I evaluated a section of the media center to ensure that the materials available to the students were current and that they addressed the content standards.

9 Teacher The SLMS is a Teacher The school library media specialist works with students to help them become enthusiastic, life-long learners. The school library media specialist encourages students to develop information literacy skills that reflect ethical use of information. The SLMS collaborates with teachers to create lessons and provide resources to create an information rich environment for students. The SLMS incorporates standards, technology, higher order thinking skills, and information literacy skills into lessons.

10 Teacher Standards and Artifacts I will encourage students toward a love of reading and learning. I will create lessons that are engaging. I will incorporate technology in to my lessons. I will collaborate with teachers to create lessons that focus on content standards as well as information literacy skills. I will teach students how to be ethical users of information. 11 Examples of Being a Teacher Dewey Decimal Power Point – Using a Power Point to introduce the students to the Dewey Decimal System allows students to learn how to navigate the library and to become independent when searching for information. Book Talk – The focus of the Book Talk was to inspire a love of reading in my students. They learn about new authors, genres, topics and much more. Two Year Plan – My main focus of the two year plan is to encourage students to learn in a way that builds their self-esteem and it also encourages the community to come into the school. By doing this, I feel that students are exposed to more interesting……….. Digital Storytelling – Digital storytelling is a wonderful way to help students learn about a new topic. Using technology keeps students engaged as well as helps them to develop research skills that they can use outside of the classroom.

12 Program Administrator The SLMS is a Program Administrator A program administrator provides access to all resources and materials for all learners. The SLMS focuses the media program towards the mission of the school. Works with others at varying levels including other schools, district and state to address media issues.

13 Program Administrator Standards and Artifacts As a program administrator, I will work with stakeholders to ensure that my program fits the needs of my school. I will guarantee that all students and other users have access to materials within the library. I will work with my administrators, other media specialists, district level staff, and professional organizations to continue to develop my media program. 14 Examples of being a Program Administrator Collection Analysis Map - I evaluated a section of the media center to ensure that it was current an that it addressed content standards. Policy and Procedures Handbook – A Policy and Procedures Handbook is the cornerstone of an effective media program. This creates a structure that addresses the needs of the students and the other stakeholders of the media program. Qwikstart Guide – I created the Quikstart guide as a tool to help the media center run more smoothly. This guide can be used by media clerks, volunteers, teachers, and other library uses. Two Year Plan – The Two Year Plan was designed to help the media program grow. It focused on student learning over the next two years. It provides opportunities for members of the community to participate in the school, it also provides students many opportunities to share their learning.

15 Conclusion All of the roles of the media specialist are linked and interwoven. They all play a vital part in student learning. By taking on all of these roles the media specialist ensures that the media program is accessible, enjoyable and relevant for today’s technology-savvy students. By being involved in not only media center activities, but those of the school, district and community, the media specialist guarantees that others will view this position as an important role in the school environment.
