Welcome to AP World History! Have a seat. There are NO other handouts! Everything you need is online

Rules of Shepherding* It’s not about you; it’s about the sheep You don’t always win Shut up and get to work ** From A Shepherd’s Life by W.H. Hudson

Myth #1 My child did well in Pre-AP, so he/she should also do well in AP World

What is AP World History? College-level course that covers the entire history of the world in one year! Encourages interdisciplinary approach to history – reading, writing, analysis Enhances students analytical writing and critical thinking skills

Myth #2 My child is guaranteed college credit if he/she passes this class

Unfortunately, No….. The class grade and the College Board are entirely separate entities Your child does not have to take the exam, although it is encouraged Colleges and universities individually decide what score on the AP exam they will accept for credit If you want to know what score the school you are interested in accepts, go to the school’s web site and search “AP credit”

What is the Exam Like? May 12, 2016 Costs approx. $90, which must be paid by January 10, 2016 Approx. 3 hours 70 multiple-choice questions (50 min) 3 Essay questions (approx. 50 min. per essay) Compare/Contrast Change Over Time Document Based Question (DBQ)

How is the Exam Scored? Grading Scale 1-5 (5 is the best) 3 and above is considered passing Most Colleges/Universities only accept 4 and 5 National pass rates vary year to year but typically are around 50% PFHS pass rate last year was about 70% Score does NOT affect grade in class or additional points on GPA

Myth #3 My child doesn’t have to take the SOLs in history because he/she is enrolled in a college course

Um, no….. Students in AP courses are still required to take SOLs AP focuses on big picture ideas, while the SOLs focus on details We cover these “details” after the AP exam and before the SOLs

Myth #4 Because this is a college course, it is graded as such and doesn’t follow other PFHS grading guidelines

Wrong. We are all doing the same thing! Course Grading Summative Assessments = 90% Formative Assessments = 10%

Summative Assessments 90% Prove that you know it! Tests, Quizzes, Notebook Retakes allowed on Tests provided the student has turned in test corrections There is no deadline for retakes The notebook can not be retaken, as it is a project grade

Formative Assessments %10 Practice toward mastery! Includes Homework, Classwork

Myth #5 There are no cumulative tests in here because LCPS got rid of mid-term and final exams

Really? Of course we still have cumulative assessments! Most tests in AP are cumulative anyway but there will most likely be a larger cumulative test given at the end of semester to give both me and your child an idea of where we stand

Expectations Students will be responsible for their own learning and seek help when needed Students will do their best work always
