Smiley Face Traits Simulation of Inherited Traits We will create a “Smiley Face” with traits determined by chance.

Determining Traits An offspring receives half of the genetic instructions from mom and half of the genetic instructions from dad. “Chance” plays a big part in which traits are passed on or inherited. For this activity, you need to find a partner.

Genotype The genotype is the “code” in letters that will help determine the trait. Capital letters will represent Dominant traits. Dominant Traits will cover or “mask” the other. Lower case letters will represent Recessive traits. These traits are “hidden” traits.

“Chance” You and your partner will flip a coin to determine which traits are matched. If you get HEADS, then circle the capital letter. If you get TAILS, then circle the lower case letter.

Phenotype Phenotype is the appearance of the trait in the organism. If there is a CAPITAL LETTER, then the dominant trait shows. If there are two lower case letters, then the recessive trait shows.

Look on Trait Key to determine the phenotype.
