Liquids and Gases  Diffusion – the gradual mixing of particles until there is an even distribution  Pressure – amount of force applied over an area  Pressure (Pa) = Force (N) / Area (m 2 )  If 8 N of force is applied onto a square with one side being 2 m long, how much pressure is applied?

Liquids and Gases  Pascal’s principle – when pressure is applied to a gas, all the gas molecules will feel the same amount of pressure.  Increase in temperature increases pressure because it increases the kinetic motion and increases the number of collisions  Atmospheric pressure decreases as you go up in altitude

Liquids and Gases  As atmospheric pressure decreases, boiling points of liquids decrease as well.  All matter has density.  Density is the relationship between mass and volume  Density (g/mL) = mass (g) / volume (mL)  Buoyancy – decrease in weight caused by an upward force

Liquids and Gases  Archimede’s Principle – an object in water is lighter by the mass of the total amount of water displaced.  What is the density of a 16 lb bowling ball that has a volume of 2 m 3 ?
