Certificate in Social Media

Who you gonna call? Dr. Karen Riggs, School of Media Arts & Studies, certificate coordinator, Mira Kuhar, certificate student coordinator, Please also say hello tonight to one of the program’s most popular faculty members, Dr. Stephanie Tikkanen, School of Communication Studies, COMS 3200 instructor.

What’s the fuss about? A certificate in social media gives you significant skills and knowledge that will help you become more competitive for jobs and internships in almost any field. You will achieve critical social media literacy that will help you understand the role of what has become the world’s dominant communication medium.

What can I do with a social media certificate? A few examples: –Market professional services effectively –Develop vital communities for companies, non- profits, hospitals and schools –Participate in professional activities such as political campaigns, event organizing & many, many others. –In fact, it’s hard to think of a career in which social media skills do not give you an edge over your peers! –Blog!

Who can participate? All Ohio University students with a 2.5 GPA or greater. Students must maintain a 2.5 overall GPA and 2.5 GPA in the certificate program. Students must have a declared major. If you are in University College, you may enroll as a BSS student. If you are Undecided or Pre-BSS, you must wait until your major is declared. Why, I have no idea.

How does the certificate work? You take 6 classes. 3 classes are required & you choose 3 other classes from a menu of electives. The 3 required courses are: –MDIA 2113: Introduction to Social Media (a Tier II Social Science class, Fall) –MDIA 4120: Advanced Social Media (Summer online for juniors, Spring for seniors) –COMS 3200: Communication and New Technologies (Fall & Spring)

Electives 1.JOUR 2500: Intro to Strategic Communication (Fall & Spring) 2.JOUR 4350: Strategic Social Media (Fall & Spring) 3.MDIA 3122: Content Curation (usually Fall, perhaps Summer 1 online) 4.MDIA XXXX: Social Media Analytics (an upper-level course coming this Spring!) 5.MDIA Special Topics: Social Media Industries (Summer 1 online) 6.MDIA 4900—Special Topics: Social Media & Politics (Fall 2016 & maybe Summer 1 online 2016) 7.ITS 4310: Privacy in the Internet Age (Spring online) We hope to add more courses soon!

How do I get started? It’s easy. See Karen to sign up for the certificate program. You may sign up tonight if you like. Plan! Attend an annual meeting for updates about the program, hear from advanced students and alums, and plan your schedule. Always consult Karen when you need help.
