 Christopher Columbus claimed America for Spain in Spanish started slavery by forcing Native Americans to be slaves.  In 1503, Spanish started bringing people from Africa to America to be slaves.  In 1619, the English brought African slaves to America

 North ◦ Small farms & few slaves ◦ Many factories  Made shoes, clothes, & other things ◦ After Americans expanded to West…North was against using slaves in the West  South ◦ Large farms called plantations  Grew cotton, sugar cane, & tobacco ◦ Thought they could not grow crops without slaves ◦ After Americans expanded to the West, more plantations…South felt more slaves needed

 North ◦ Said people should be free ◦ Said it was not right for one person to own another ◦ Wanted to make new laws against slavery in the West ◦ Some wrote books, gave speeches against slavery, or helped slaves run away  South ◦ Claimed the Constitution allowed slavery ◦ Said that people in the North should not tell them what to do ◦ The North’s views made the South very angry & South was worried ◦ Was angry because of Tariff (tax on goods from other countries)

 Two individuals that played a major role in assisting slaves in attaining freedom was:  Harriet Tubman  Abraham Lincoln.

 A slave (1820) that away to the Canada  Went back to the South & helped hundreds of slaves escaped to Canada  most well-known of all the Underground Railroad's "conductors." During a ten-year span she made 19 trips into the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom.  Came from a poor family, did not attend school, read many books, & became a lawyer  Became President in 1861  Believed that slavery was wrong..did not want to see slavery in West  Well liked because he was honest & smart

 Abraham Lincoln stated that slavery should not be allowed in the West.  The South was afraid that Abe would work to end slavery everywhere.  Eleven southern states decided that they no longer wanted to be part of the United States.  In 1861, they started a new country. They called their country the Confederate States of America.  Shortly afterwards, the Civil War begin.

 Confederate States rejoined the United States  Reconstruction Time – rebuilding cities, farms, and roads  Slaves began free ◦ Never had gone to school ◦ Needed jobs ◦ Large cotton plantation owners paid African Americans to work farm

 A former slave, Booker T. Washington ◦ Became a teacher ◦ Started a school for African Americans in Alabama called the Tuskegee Institute ◦ Taught African Americans to do many jobs ◦ Thousands of students studies at the institute

 United States Senators and Representatives wanted to help African American have better lives ◦ Added 3 laws (amendments) to the U.S. Constitution -  13 th Amendment  The 1 st law said that no one in the United States could own slaves  14 th Amendment  The 2 nd law said that African Americans were citizens with equal rights  15 th Amendment  Said that African Americans could vote  Just a note – REMEMBER – American Women were not allowed to vote

 By 1900 more than 20 African American had become senators and representatives in Congress
