How to teach speaking

Why encourage students to do speaking tasks? What are the problems in teaching speaking? What kind of speaking activities can students do? How should teachers correct speaking? What is the role of teacher in speaking activity? More speaking suggestions/activities

Why encourage students to do speaking tasks? Rehearsal Rehearsing having discussions outside the classroom to get the feel of communicating in the foreign language. Feedback Speaking tasks provide feedback for both students and teachers since they reveal the language problems that students may have. These tasks can give students confidence and satisfaction.

Engagement Speaking activities should be highly motivating.

What are the problems of teaching speaking? Students’ low level of English. Students are shy to speak. Motivation and encouragement. Students are afraid of making mistakes.

What kind of speaking activities can students do? Information gaps (elementary/intermediate) Describe and Draw – Story-telling activity Surveys/questionnaires (elementary) They provoke students speaking ability and opinion exchange. Discussion (intermediate/upper intermediate) Role - play (upper intermediate/advanced)

Advantages of students work in pairs or groups in speaking activities: This kind of activities gives teacher a feedback about his students. He will know the weakness and strength points of students. Students will speak more than teacher and reduce dependence on teacher. Every student will speak.

How should teachers correct speaking? Teacher should not stop students many times as constant interruption from the teacher will destroy the purpose of the speaking activity. Teacher should keep the mistakes in mind until the activity ends.

What is the role of teacher in speaking activity? Watch and listen Organiser Helper Evaluator
