PBIS Process and Classroom Management Bringing it all together LMSA 2011

What is PBIS? Take a moment to analyze PBIS at your school –Who is involved? –What is your role? –Are the students aware of the process? –Are you aware of the process?

PBIS takes… Teacher buy-in Student buy-in Full staff participation One can not go at it alone

What have we done at Maplewood? We have been implementing PBIS for 6 years. We changed the process yearly for 4 years. We dedicate at least 3 hours at the beginning of the year for re-teaching of returning staff We have a 5 hour training for new staff

How can it get better? Work closely with PBIS team and administrators to focus on your positive data Share the data with the entire staff- the good and the ‘bad’ Ask for input- PDSA Share the data with students Color code the Code of Conduct PDSA –Remember it is a process, things can change

What does PBIS look like school-wide? (must all be done; cannot pick and choose) 1) State behavioral expectations 2) Specify student behaviors (rules) 3) Model, teach, &practice appropriate behaviors 4) Reinforce appropriate behaviors 5) Develop an array of consequences & interventions 6) Evaluate in order to make data-based decisions

Making it work 1)State behavioral expectations –3 B’s –STAR Safe, Thoughtful, Accountable, Respectful 2) Specify student behaviors (rules) –This can be done many ways. –We have posters for all areas of the school –MMS postersMMS posters

3) Model, teach, & practice appropriate behaviors We developed lesson plans to focus on each area of our schoollesson plans The teachers are required to teach the lessons –the first three weeks of school during homeroom. –in January as a refresher/ re-teach Teachers and staff should follow same expectations as students

4) Reinforce appropriate behaviors Mid 6 weeks rewards –Drawing for all those with no referrals –Free shirt day, McDonald’s coupons, lunch cut pass, 10 minute ‘free’ time, goodie pack End of 6 weeks rewards – All students with no referrals –Theme days Mid Term and EOY rewards –APR

5) Develop an array of Consequences Lunch/After school Detention Lonely lunch PE / Enrichment Detention Parent watch time CICO Interventions Behavior Reflection Activity Counseling Sessions Team meetings RTI meetings Parent/ student/ teacher/ admin conferences

6) Evaluate to make data-based decisions Use the information that you get from your data system SHARE. SHARE. SHARE –DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DATA

YOUR TEAM CAN NOT FIX WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW IS BROKEN SHARE YOUR DATA TALK ABOUT YOUR DATA USE YOUR DATA

LEVEL 2 – YELLOW KIDS You have done all the interventions that you can, now what? We, along with other schools, have implemented a check in- check out. Students can take more responsibility for their daily and hourly actions.

Tertiary training from parish Implemented last school year PBIS team was modified to include the Yellow Team The Yellow Team has a different leader than the functioning PBIS team

CICO Teacher assessment Student assessment CICO goes home daily Graphs are sent home weekly, bi- monthly, or monthly as needed Basic form of constant progress monitoring Provides immediate feedback to student

How it helps Student is held accountable in each class/ school setting Rewards are given at home –Important to the support system Rewards are given daily/weekly at school when goals are met –Rewards include: Jolly Rancher, mini chocolate, basketball during DEAR/ lunch –May have to work on a daily reward and build up to weekly

What does CICO look like? CICO referral process –Not one person can assign someone to CICO –Team of teachers must provide data requesting CICOdata –PBIS yellow team makes final decision based on data provided –Students and parents must sign contractcontract CICO form –Teacher rating for specified behavior skills –Student self- rating for same skills

0 = Not Successful 1 = Partially Successful 2 = Successful Be Safe Be RespectfulBe Ready Teacher initials Keep hands, feet, and objects to self. Use kind words and actions. Follow directions Work in Class 1 st Period Student self rate nd Period Student self rate rd Period Student self rate th Period Student self rate th Period Student self rate th Period Student self rate th Period Student self rate Common Times Student self rate Total Points = Points Possible = This week: ______________ Goal ____________ Teacher Comments: Name: Date: Parent Signature:______________________________________________________________ Comments:

What about the kid that will not bring his form to every class? We also implemented a Teacher Only CICO Allows for record keeping on same level with no student involvement Parents still get a progress report

Recap PBIS is a school wide process You must look at the data Allow students to have input CICO holds students accountable Teacher only CICO allows for daily monitoring without the frustration of ‘a lost Comet Card’

Thank you for attending PBIS Team leader Yellow Team leader PBIS Team member Trusted follower of PBIS and two year PBIS Team member
