REPORT 2 Technologies used by an adult at work (e.g. your teacher) ADVANTAGES + DISADVANTAGES

1. Mobile Technology - Laptop ADVANTAGES Allows the teacher to do work in a variety of locations. Even when on a sub, can carry on with work in the classroom. Wireless technology allows teacher to have access to home drive from anywhere in the school. Reports can be written. Internet dialup facility from home. DISADVANTAGES Bulkier than alternative technologies such as a PDA. Have a relatively short battery life. Generally more expensive than desktop computers. Greater risk of damage, loss and theft, than a desktop computer.

2. Reprographics - photocopier ADVANTAGES Allows mass production of student handouts and booklets fairly cheaply. Saves having to print out several copies from the laser printer. This will help save toner and reduce wear and tear on printer. Handouts and booklets can be collated and stapled. Offer network printing, scanning and fax sending features. DISADVANTAGES May be one person who has control of its usage. Means user has to wait in queue for work to be done. If it breaks down, may take some time to repair. Results in possible backlog of work. Being multifunctional, you may have to wait to use fax function, whilst a big print copy job is taking place.

3. Internet - Broughton Hall School website ADVANTAGES School reports can be carried out online. Can report computer faults using online system. View newsletters and other school updates. Able to post resources and schemes of work electronically. Students and staff can access remotely. Web based . News ticker messages can be broadcast. DISADVANTAGES If internet is down, cannot access advantages on the left. Reduced control, as it relies on information being updated by technical staff. Information may be out of date – can become stale.

4. Entertainment - Digital TV ADVANTAGES Access high quality pictures. Vast number of TV + radio channels available, for education & leisure. Interactive facilities available. Access worldwide TV stations. Good for developing languages. Interactive features available. Additional features, such as games and www access. DISADVANTAGES Many of the stations may require a subscription cost. Pictures can be affected by extreme weather conditions. Greater number of channels, may lead to inferior quality of some programmes. People may become addicted, particularly through ‘channel hopping’.
