7 The Main Risks Commercial – the blur between content and advertising Content – Trustworthy? Appropriate? Extreme material? Contact – Social Media… but also many new forms e.g. P2P (filesharing) e.g. Multi-user gaming

8 What can we do… at School We will educate them about the risks (Yr7 ICT Lessons) They are always highly supervised All activity is logged Most social media and P2P is disabled Mobile access to Wi-Fi? – but internet access will still be filtered.

9 What can we do… at Home Get involved with your children online Encourage balanced use – set time limits Make sure they know who they can talk to Discuss good practice Agree rules as a family Keep the computer in a family room; use a family email address for shopping etc. Set up internet filtering – especially on mobile devices – but don’t rely on it! Cyber-bullying Educate our children – passwords safe, non-retaliation, block contacts The child must feel able to confide in us (e.g. Allow the child to continue with his phone or the computer) Report to the school, the internet provider or the Police Save any messages or conversations as evidence
