Adjectives – describe the noun The talented singer performed for her enthusiastic fans. What are the two adjectives in this sentence? Write them down!

Adjectives are words that describe and modify nouns by telling what kind, how many, or which one. The awesome football team beat Poway’s team! Our team won by 4 points. It was our homecoming game.

Adjectives answer the question How many? What kind? Which one? Fill in the blanks with adjectives! The __________ teachers gave a __________ test on _________ afternoon.

The magnificent butterfly flew under the brown branch. It’s your turn! Write down the adjectives in each of the following sentences: The magnificent butterfly flew under the brown branch. The butterfly fluttered its delicate wings.

Demonstrative Adjectives Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out specific people or things. There are four demonstrative adjectives: this, that, those, these

“This” and “that” are used with singular nouns and answer the question which one? I want this phone for Christmas! That boy aced the test!

“These” and “those” are used with plural nouns and answer the question which ones? Those goats are climbing trees! These goats are on the ground.

Possessive Adjectives Possessive adjectives are used to show who or what owns something. my your his “Can you find her pencil?” her its our their “Whose laptop is it?” whose “That is my laptop.”

Comparative adjectives used to compare two nouns or pronouns. Add –er to the end of one syllable words. Add more to the beginning of multi-syllable words. NEVER use –er and more together e.g., Never say “Ms. Frizzle is a more greater teacher!”

Superlative adjectives Used to compare three or more nouns or pronouns Add –est to the end of one syllable words. Add most to the beginning of multi-syllable words. NEVER use -est and most together. e.g., never say “Most greatest teacher”

Some examples. . . Ms. Frizzle is the brightest science teacher in the world. This English II class has the smartest kids in it! These “Grammar Monday” PowerPoints are the most helpful way to learn grammar!
