Welcome to our HCMS Professional Development Session Power Point Presentations

The Benefits of Power Point It offers a new way to present your everyday lessons and cover core content. It helps your students experience technology within the classroom. It also helps you introduce technology into your classroom, helping you meet Kentucky teacher standards.

Getting Started!!! Once you open Microsoft Power Point, you will see a blank slide. This is the slide design. You might want to go ahead and add a few slides. You can do this by going to Insert on the menu bar and scrolling down to New Slide. If you want to change the design, you should right click and scroll down to Slide Design. This will show you several options for the backdrop of your presentation. Open up Power Point on your computer and give it a try!

Slide Layout You can also change the way the text looks on the screen. Simply right click and scroll down to Slide Layout and you will see several different options for laying out the text. You will notice that you can also add clip art, tables, charts, diagrams, and pictures and media clips from other files along with the text. I have used both the Title, the Title, Content, and Text and the Title and Text layouts for the slides you’ve seen so far. You can take a minute to try this if you want to!

Animation Schemes You can also change the way your text comes onto the screen. Just right click and scroll down to Slide Design. Then click on Animation Schemes. You will choose to either apply the effect to that slide only, or all of the slides (Apply to All Slides). Afterward, you can also add effects to the text by right clicking and scrolling down to Custom Animation. This allows you to customize each line of text on individual slides. Why don’t you give it a try?

Adding Sounds You can also add sound effects to your slides. Go to Insert on the menu bar and scroll down to Movies and Sounds. Then choose Sound from Clip Organizer. You can browse the sounds, and you can listen to a sound before inserting it by scrolling down and choosing Preview/ Properties. Once you insert a sound, move the speaker icon off the screen so that it will not appear during your slide show. Go on and give it a try!

Or… You can even add music from a file on your computer. Go to Insert on the menu bar and scroll down to Movies and Sounds. Then choose Sound from File instead.

Finally… Finally…  You can add your own voice to narrate the slides.  Go to Insert on the menu bar and scroll down once again to Movies and Sounds.  Then choose Record Sound.  You may already have a microphone on your monitor. If you don’t, you will have to plug one into the back of your computer.

Controlling Your Sounds TTo control the start and duration of your sounds, right click on Custom Animation. MMake sure the Start window says After Previous. TThen click on the Media link and scroll down to timing. TThere you can choose to delay the sound, repeat the sound, or set other triggers. TThe sounds on this power point presentation are repeated until I click on to the next slide.

Adding Clip Art You can also add clip art to your slides. Go to Insert the menu bar, and scroll down to Picture. Then choose Clip Art. You will type in a search focus, and you can see what the clip looks like before inserting it by scrolling down to Preview/ Properties. You can also add tables, charts, diagrams, and text boxes by going to the Insert menu. Go ahead and insert a picture into your slide!

Or…  You can also add a picture from a file on your computer to the slides.  Go to Insert on the menu bar and scroll down to Pictures.  Then choose From File instead.  You could also save clip art off the internet into your files and use them in power point presentations.  is a favorite of mine to search. Once you go there, just choose Images.

By going to Insert, then Picture, then Word Art, you can add a little flair to text. You can also click on the icon at the bottom of the screen. You can move the Word Art around and change the shape of it by playing with the frame around the clip art you insert. You can also edit it with the Word Art menu. Take a minute to tinker with Word Art.

Here are a few examples of what you can do with Word Art…

You can also draw shapes on your slides using the Auto Shapes at the bottom of the page !!! You can change the color of the shapes by clicking on the icon on the bottom of the page that looks like a watering can.

Backgrounds You have probably noticed by now, that I have used different backgrounds for some of the slides. In order to do this, right click on the slide and select Background. You can change the color of the background by scrolling down and selecting More Colors… and clicking on one. You can also change the appearance by scrolling down to Fill Effects… and choosing Gradient, Texture, or Pattern. You will be able to preview the screen before you Apply it. You should try it now!

Setting Up Your Slide Show There are many different ways to set up your slide show. Go to Slide Show on the menu bar and there you will find Set Up Show. This will allow you to customize the way your show plays. For example, you could set it up to play continuously, to play automatically, or you could even set it up like this one… where the text and slides are advanced manually by clicking the mouse.

One more thing… IIIIt is very easy to create WebQuests with Power Point. CCCCreate you power point presentation. TTTThen insert hyperlinks throughout your slide show. PPPPost your show on your s s s s s cccc hhhh oooo oooo llll ’’’’ ssss w w w w eeee bbbb ssss iiii tttt eeeeand your students can view your show and click on the links for interactive learning!
