Class Discussion Item 2.1 Proper Car Jump Start
Schematic of a Proper Car Jump
Proper Cable Connection Attach red cable to positive post of the good and dead battery Attach black cable to Negative post of running car
Proper Cable Connection Do not attach remaining black cable to negative post of dead car Instead: Attach to a clean, unpainted spot on the engine or frame away from the dead battery
Why This Works Manufactures wire the frame and engine directly to to negative terminal Thus, completing the electric circuit
Why? Recharging causes water in the dead battery to split into Hydrogen and Oxygen 2H 2 0 (l) 2H 2(g) + 0 2(g)
Removing the Cables In reverse order: Negative cable from engine Negative cable from good battery Positive cable from dead battery Positive cable from good battery
Safety Make sure cars are not touching Never allow jumper cable claps to touch while any clamps are attached to battery Keep engine in good car running Be sure to connect Positive to Positive and Vice versa
