8.04 meal service and meal etiquette

Different Styles of Serving Food Family Style- When the food being served is in the middle of the table in serving dishes and is passed around to each person to the right to serve themselves. ex. traditional Thanksgiving dinner Plate Service- When the food is placed on the plate in the kitchen and brought out to the person eating. ex. restaurant Russian/Continental- This is a very formal style of meal service that usually consists of multiple pieces of dinnerware, flatware, and stemware. Usually many courses of food. Buffet- People help themselves to food set out on a table. ex. Golden Corral

Some definitions to know… Etiquette- courtesy shown by using good manners when eating. Cultural – changes depend on where you are and what you were taught. There are subcultures within cultures (teens, families, elderly, men vs. women, etc.) Tableware-any item used for serving or eating food, plates, bowls, glasses Flatware-knives, forks, spoons, gravy ladles… Place setting-Tableware needed by one person to eat a meal.

They can help you get a job. They can help you get something you want. They can bring you respect. They can help you impress a romantic interest (and his/her parents!) They can help you get help from teachers they are FREE!

Top 10 Table/Eating Manners Use the accepted phrases: please, thank you, may I, excuse me, I’m sorry. Thank the host. When leaving the table, place napkin in your chair. If you drop something, leave it on the floor and ask for a new one. Butter your bread one bite at a time. Cut your meat, pancakes, pasta, etc. one bite at a time. Spoon soup away from you and sip quietly. Get a little bit of everything to be polite. NO CELL PHONES. No burping or other bodily gases…way to ruin the mood!
