2 Setting the Table Place setting- the arrangement of tableware that each person needs for a meal Flatware- knife, fork, and teaspoon Salt & Pepper shakers Serving spoons and forks Several forks or spoons, bread plate, salad plate, two glasses, coffee cup, and saucer.

3 Special Touches Table covering- adds formal elegance to a meal. Or u could use place mats. Table decoration- such as a flower in a vase; can make a meal more enjoyable. Lighting- candle light creates a dramatic effect.

4 Serving Styles Family service style- food is brought to the table in bowls and on serving platters, which are passed from person to person until everyone is served. Plate service- used when table space is limited. When the table is set and food is put on each persons plate. Buffet service- all the plates, flatware and food- in serving bowls and on platters-are arranged on a serving table.

5 Using Good Manners Enable people to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Thoughtfulness to others is the basis for good manners. The way you look, the way you eat, and the way you talk to others all indicate your respect for them and for yourself. Good manners you practice at home are an asset in social settings away from home.

6 Appearance and Hygiene Important for both your own health and for the health of others Always wash your hands before mealtime; when passing food to others you should do so with clean hands. When you need to cough or sneeze cover your mouth or nose with a napkin and turn away from the table; if the problem continues excuse yourself from the table.

7 Etiquette at the Table Etiquette- Refers to accepted rules of behavior in a culture. Ask for serving dishes to be passed to you instead of reaching over the table. Eat only after everyone has been served. Chew and swallow food before talking Sit up straight Only eat with your fingers when its appropriate Use your napkin

8 Etiquette at a Restaurant When entering a restaurant look around to see if it is a formal or informal restaurant where guests seat themselves. To get the attention of a server speak in an ordinary voice as he or she passes your table. If the server is across the room raise your hand to catch his or her eye. After receiving the bill make sure your total is correct

9 Etiquette at a Restaurant (2) Tipping- giving extra money to servers in appreciation of good service Table Service- servers take your order at the table, bring the food, and clean up after the meal. Discuss topics that interest everyone Avoid discussing unpleasant experiences When you’re a guest in someone’s home, thank your hosts before leaving.

10 Conversation Important part of dinner Meals are time for warmth and friendships, not for arguments and disputes.
