Aspects to be considered: – The purpose of a conclusion – The content – Beginning the conclusion – How long should it be? – Your individual approach writing the conclusion

The conclusion should bring your argument home by – Leaving the reader feeling that your discussion is over – Giving the reader something to think about

The conclusion should match the introduction in terms of – the ideas presented – the argument put forward

Restate the main argument Reiterate the most important points and evidence The challenge – To reiterate the arguments in a fresh way

Depending on the type of discussion, additional elements may include – recommendations for future action – speculations on future trends – implications and/or consequences – suggestions for further research or discussion

What doesn’t go in the conclusion: – New information, new ideas, new arguments These should have been addressed in the body of the discussion – Quotes these should have been used in the main body of the discussion

Begin with a sentence referring to the main subject that was discussed in the body in the essay – You could paraphrase the question Use words or phrases that signal you are ending the discussion

Give the reader something to think about: – As health information networks expand to intersect with other personal information networks, creating the potential for new, more widespread and more intrusive forms of information use, it becomes increasingly important for critical debate to occur at all levels of the community.

As health information networks expand to intersect with other personal information networks, creating the potential for new, more widespread and more intrusive forms of information use, it becomes increasingly important for critical debate to occur at all levels of the community.

Approximately 7%-10% of the whole essay – For 1000 words you might have four or five sentences – For longer discussions, the conclusion may be several paragraphs
