Story Literary Elements Some basics that every good story must have ….

Every story needs characters People Animals Or Creatures

The protagonist is the main character

The antagonist is the opposing force

Great stories have a conflict Man vs. Man Man vs. NatureMan vs. Society Man vs. Himself Man vs. Machine

Internal or External Conflict Mental struggle with-in a character A struggle with an outside force/character

Predictions What you think will happen in a text using pictures, reading the summary, or genre

A hint about what will happen next is called foreshadowing For example, if you hear this: Then you know someone’s about to get eaten!

Flashback  Events from the past that interrupts the story

The time and place of the story is the setting

Exposition  The part of the story usually the beginning which explains the background and the setting of the story. The characters are often introduced in the exposition

Rising Action  Central part of the story, during which various problems arise  Leads up to the climax

The climax is the most exciting part!!

Falling Action  The part of the story that follows the climax or turning point.  It contains the action or dialogue necessary to lead the story to a resolution

The point of view is the perspective of the story “That rotten wolf tried to eat us!!!!” “I was framed! I just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar!”

Whether you’re the reader, or the writer, a great story includes all these literary elements!!! flashback conflict setting point of view climax characters protagonist antagonist foreshadowing rising action
