The History of Miles College

Just the Beginning O Miles College was founded in 1898 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (Now the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as the C.M.E. Church) O The college was named after Bishop William H. Miles O The college is still supported by and affiliated with the CME church O Originally located in Thomasville O Moved to Fairfield, AL in the Spring of 1907

Bishop William H. Miles Born a Slave in 1828 CME Church licensed him to preach in 1857 Elected Bishop in 1870 Saw the church as a source of spiritual solace for freed slaves Was a central figure in the CME church until his death in Miles College is named in his honor.
