Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group Slide 2 Outline Cross Disciplinary Remote Instrumentation Working Group Introduction Internet2 T. Charles Yun Last Year’s BOF Session WG Charter Initial Tasks Introduce speakers Introduction

October 2002Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group Slide 3 Summary of past work BOF session in Arlington earlier this year Introduced concept of full working group and need for charter. Copies of draft of WG Charter available as handouts or online: Introduction

October 2002Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group Slide 4 Working Group Charter (1/2) Introduction Numerous communities and research fields are using remote instruments to assist their work as advanced networks allow much more sophisticated devices to be used. Groups are separately learning to use and optimize these instruments but, to date, have not effectively shared their experience and knowledge. The Cross- Disciplinary Remote Instrumentation Working Group's primary goal is to provide a forum through which these discussions can take place. Mission The proposed mission of the Remote Instrumentation Working Group is to: 1. Establish a community who create and use remote instruments. 2. Provide a forum through which knowledge can be shared. 3. Identify areas in which the community at large can benefit from shared work. Introduction

October 2002Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group Slide 5 Working Group Charter (2/2) Goals- Technical - Survey and document existing remote instrument usage. Document locations, existing connectivity, type of equipment, usage, lessons learned, accessibility, etc. -Document lessons learned, hardware, cooperative vendors (hardware and software), etc. -Identify performance parameters and metrics (e.g., TCP/IP, E2E, latency wrt specific instruments, etc.) Goals- Community -Create opportunities through which researchers can discuss relevant topics -Document how remote instruments are currently being used. -Define "remote instrumentation" and sub-fields as useful to the working group. -How are instruments shared Introduction
