Writing the decision Aim: to peer mark an answer To understand what the examiner expects in the decision making question

After reading through the answer decide whether this student has done the following: They clearly state their option They give reasons for their chosen option They explain why their option is sustainable They use evidence to support their choice They explain why they think their chosen option is more sustainable than each of the other options. They do this by comparing their option to EACH of the others When comparing their choice to the other options they compare in terms of sustainability The reasons why chosen option is more sustainable than each of the other options is well developed They explain disadvantages of the chosen option Gives one advantage of each of the rejected options Written work is legible and spelling, grammar and punctuation are very accurate Good use of geographical vocabulary When they discuss sustainability of the options they mostly focus on the economic sustainability? They cover all of the bullet points Extra: Go through and underline any parts where the student discusses sustainability Can you find any points discussing economic sustainability? Social sustainability or environmental sustainability?

This answer got into level 4. But how? Level 4 (13-16) marks well-developed reasons given as to why chosen option is more sustainable than each of the other options with a clear understanding of the term Well-developed reasons given for disadvantages of chosen option Well-developed reasons given for advantage of each of the rejected options Written work ids legible and spelling, grammar and punctuation are very accurate and meaning very clearly communicated. Good use of geographical terminology Which of the above did this student do? CLUE they didn’t manage all to L4 but still got into L4

Now look back at your answer… Read your answer again Go through the list of statements from our first activity. Which of these did you not do? Write down three things you need to do in the future

What the examiner says… Do not just write a list of simple points. You need to show development of an idea. EXPLAIN your ideas- So use connectives such as- this means that… therefore…. As a result…. Because… Show understanding of sustainability- be specific- economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainability. What is the definition of sustainability? FOCUS on the QUESTION Use the bullet points given as a structure for your answer (They will NOT be the same in every exam) Spend 30 minutes on the decision- its worth 16 marks! Divide time according to the bullet points You NEED to make comparisons when justifying why your choice is more sustainable than the others Beware of lifting directly from the sources Know what the sources are- so you can easily refer to them in your answer
